About this tool
The online mic test that shows what your microphone is really doing
Free online mic test: check your microphone in seconds
Our online mic test tells you in a few seconds whether your microphone works, how loud it is and how it sounds. Open the page, press Start test, allow access and speak. A mic test online like this one shows your voice as a live waveform, a decibel meter and a noise floor reading, so you do not have to guess whether people can hear you. It runs in your browser, needs no download and sends nothing to a server.
Use it before a Zoom call, a stream, a podcast session or a gaming match, or any time your headset, laptop or USB microphone seems quiet, muffled or silent. It works with the built-in microphone on a laptop, a wired or Bluetooth headset, a USB or XLR interface, and the microphone on a phone or tablet.
How to test your microphone online
It takes under a minute, and you can repeat it as often as you like.
- Press Start test and choose Allow when your browser asks for microphone access.
- Choose your microphone from the list if you have more than one.
- Say a few words at a normal volume and watch the waveform and level meter move.
- Aim for peaks between about -18 dB and -6 dB. Lower the input volume if you hit 0 dB, and raise it if you stay below -40 dB.
- Turn on hear yourself, or record a five second clip, to judge the sound by ear.
Live mic test, web mic test and mic test playback
This live mic test updates dozens of times a second. The waveform shows the shape of your voice, the spectrum shows which pitches are strongest, and the peak marker shows how close you came to distortion. Because it is a web mic test, nothing is installed, and it behaves the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS.
Want to hear it? Switch on hear yourself to play your voice back through your headphones in real time, or press the record button for a short mic test recorder clip and play it back at once. This mic test record and mic test playback loop is the quickest way to notice background noise, room echo and the wrong distance from the microphone. For longer takes, use the online voice recorder, which saves MP3 files for up to two hours.
Mic test iPhone, Android, Chromebook and Zoom
A mic test iPhone owners can run works in Safari: tap Start test, allow the microphone and speak. On Android, use Chrome or Edge. Chromebook users can pick the built-in microphone or a headset from the same list.
If you are preparing for a meeting, run a Zoom mic test here first. If the waveform moves in the browser, your hardware is fine, and any silence in Zoom, Teams or Google Meet comes from the input setting inside that app rather than from the microphone. You can also switch echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control on or off to hear roughly what a video call does to your voice.
Camera and mic test: webcam mic test in one go
Most calls need both sound and picture, so we built a webcam and mic test that checks them together. It shows resolution, measured frames per second, brightness and colour balance, while a level meter confirms the microphone is picking you up. Use this camera and mic test before an interview, an online class or a livestream. If you only need video, the camera mic test also works with the microphone switched off, and if you only need sound, stay on the mic test above.
More than a mic test: sound, keyboard, mouse, touch and vibration
Hardware problems rarely come alone, so the site covers the rest of your setup. The speaker sound test includes a left right sound test, a stereo sound test and a 5.1 surround sound test. The online keyboard test lights up every key, measures typing speed and works as a Chromebook keyboard test. The mouse click test catches a double click fault.
Phones get a touch screen test, a multi touch test, live sensor telemetry and a phone vibration test, and a controller vibration test sits inside the game controller tester. For displays there is a dead pixel test, a stuck pixel fixer and a screen ruler in inches and centimetres.
Why use this online mic test
Most mic tests only show a line that moves. This one gives numbers: level in decibels, peak, noise floor and sample rate, plus a plain verdict and a button that copies a report you can paste into a support ticket. It is private by design, because audio never leaves your device. It is free, needs no account, and every page loads only the small script it needs, so it stays fast on a phone.
Microphone not working? Try this checklist
If the mic test shows no movement, work through the list in order. Check the cable, USB port or Bluetooth connection. Make sure a mute switch or keyboard key has not silenced the microphone. Select the right input in the dropdown and in your system sound settings. Raise the input volume. Close other apps that may be using the microphone. Finally, allow microphone access for this site from the lock icon in the address bar and reload the page. If it still fails in another browser, the microphone itself is probably faulty.
