FAQ

Common questions

My mouse double-clicks when I click once. Why?

The switch inside the button is wearing out. This test flags two presses of the same button less than 80 ms apart, which a human cannot do deliberately.

Why do the back and forward buttons not light up?

Some mice need a driver to send them, and a few browsers keep them for navigation. The test blocks navigation while the pad is active.

How accurate is the polling rate?

It is an estimate. Browsers batch pointer events, so the reading is a lower bound unless your browser supports raw pointer updates.

How can I test a mouse?

Move your pointer into the test pad, then press every button, including the left, right and middle buttons and any side buttons, and scroll the wheel up and down. Each input lights up when it registers, and a warning appears if a single press fires twice.

How to check for a mouse?

Move the pointer into the test pad on this page. If the position readout changes and the buttons light up when you click, your computer has detected the mouse. If nothing happens, check the USB cable or receiver, change the batteries on a wireless mouse, try another port, and check that the mouse appears in your system's device settings.

How to test right click mouse?

Place the pointer in the test pad and press the right button. The right button indicator lights up and its counter increases. The page also blocks the context menu inside the pad, so the menu does not get in the way of the test. If the right button does not respond but the left does, the switch or the mouse settings may be at fault.

How to test mouse click delay?

This test does not measure click latency in milliseconds, but it catches the most common timing fault. If one press registers twice in less than 80 ms, a chatter warning appears, which means the switch is failing. You can also check the polling rate estimate to see how often the mouse reports its position. For a precise latency figure, specialised hardware is required.

How do I run a double click mouse test?

Click the same button normally a few times inside the pad. If the page reports a second press within 80 ms, the switch is chattering and the mouse is double clicking by itself.

Guide

Mouse Test: what it checks and how to read it

Mouse click test

Move into the test pad and press each button. The mouse diagram lights up for left, middle, right, back and forward clicks and a counter tracks how many times each button registered. This mouse test click view, like the rest of the mouse tests here, makes it obvious when a button has stopped working or only works on the edge.

Double click mouse test

A mouse that double clicks when you click once has a worn switch. The double clicking mouse test watches for two presses of the same button less than 80 milliseconds apart, which a person cannot do on purpose, and raises a warning. Also check the double-click speed in your operating system mouse settings, because a very sensitive value can mimic the fault.

Scroll wheel and polling rate

Scroll up and down to count wheel steps in both directions. Move the mouse in fast circles for a few seconds to estimate the polling rate in hertz. Combine this with the keyboard test when you troubleshoot a new desk setup.
